How do I register for business taxes?
a. If you are new to MTO, start by creating a personal user profile. Click here to watch a tutorial.
b. Log in to MTO using your username and password. You will arrive at the MTO homepage. Click here to discover how MTO works by watching a tutorial.
2. Complete Treasury’s registration application .
a. If the business has a federal Employer Identification Number (EIN), the EIN will also be the Treasury business account number. On the MTO homepage, click Start a New Business (E-Registration) to register the business with Treasury for Michigan taxes. The online application will open in a new tab or window on your web browser. Click here to watch a tutorial on the e-registration process.
b. If the business is not required by the IRS to have an EIN or if you have applied for but not yet received an EIN, Treasury will assign the business an account number after you complete the paper version of the registration application. Click here to download the physical form. Allow 7-10 days for mailing and an additional 2 weeks for processing.
c. Print or make a copy of your registration application for your records.
3. Return to MTO and start interacting with Treasury!
a. If you completed the online registration application, you may need to log in to MTO again. Your application is recognized on Treasury’s system within 15 minutes. However, it can take up to 48 hours to process an electronic application.
b. To find out if Treasury processed your registration application, try to connect your MTO user profile to the business account. We recommend creating this relationship through the Manage Business Registration Tax Service. Click here to watch a tutorial.
i. If you enter the business’ account number and proceed to the next step in the Connect to a Business process, your application has been processed.
ii. If, after entering the business’ account number, you get an error message asking you to complete the online registration application, click “Cancel” and allow us more time to process your application.
